The popularity of absinth grew anno 1840 when the French army ordered absinth during its North Africa campaigns for its soldiers, who enjoyed its grown fond drink in the native country furthermore too. So absinth developed into the society drink of the 19th century. Particularly artists as Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas, Gaugin, van Gogh, Manet or Baudelaire inspired themselves with absinth.

Eponymous for Absinth is Artemisia Absinthum, Lat. for wormwood as one of the most important ingredients of this drink. Wormwood contains Thujon which has a psychoactive virtue and was forbidden in Germany in 1923 and permitted since 1998 again.
